OUR HISTORY

In 1990 some of the South African Black funeral undertakers attended the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) convention in the United States of America.

It was during this convention that they realised that there was a funeral undertakers’ association in South Africa called National African Funeral Undertakers Association (NAFUA) which was based only in the former Transvaal Province and it excluded other provinces such as the Cape, Natal and Orange Free State.

After a long battle with NAFUA trying to convince them that it is an illegitimate structure the Black Funeral Directors finally agreed with each other that a structure which will encompass all provinces be formed.

A national conference was then held in Bloemfontein on 11-05-1999. It was in this conference that the Constitution was adopted and the name South African Funeral Practitioners Association (SAFPA) came into existence with the first President being Mr. Mafete of the North West Province.

A campaign was undertaken to recruit all funeral directors of all races to join this association because it is a non-racial association. Constitutions for the provinces were also required to be drawn up. It was agreed upon that National Conferences be held once a year on a rotational basis and a special conference if so required to be held at a neutral venue which was to be Bloemfontein.

Since 1999 the association has been served by six (7), Presidents Mr. Mafete, Prof. Bopape, Mr. Ngoma, Mr. Marumo, Mr. Leshabane, Mr. Quma and Mr. Mnisi who is serving his second term in office.
